Technological advance (Scientific research in salivamics)

Science: salivamics research

Saliva is a dynamic biofluid composed of glandular secretions, oral mucosal cells, blood, and crevicular fluid. A healthy adult produces between 500 and 1500 mL daily at a rate of 0.3-0.4 mL/min (Zhang et al., 2015). It contains DNA, mRNA, microRNA, proteins, metabolites, microbiota, enzymes (amylases, lysozyme, peroxidase), hormones, immunoglobulins and mucins, while its inorganic component is dominated by ions essential for oral homeostasis (Song et al., 2023), making it a key tool for clinical diagnosis.

The term Salivomics, born in 2008, describes the study of its components and their impact on health and disease (Thamaraiselvi & Brundha, n.d.). Its diagnostic potential continues to expand, consolidating it as a non-invasive alternative to blood testing.

Saliva as a Diagnostic Fluid of the Future, already in the present

In the last 50 years, research on saliva as a diagnostic fluid has experienced notable growth over the last 5 decades. From initial studies with dozens of publications in the 70s, to more than 2 thousand articles published each year since 2019 (see graph).

These studies highlight the potential of saliva as a versatile diagnostic tool and suggest an advance in technological approaches for its application in non-invasive diagnostic methods, while reinforcing society’s interest in going in this direction.

At Happy Innova we want to revolutionize the field of non-invasive medical diagnosis by carrying out a first approach that focuses on detecting and monitoring a variety of salivary biomarkers associated with different health conditions.

Since 2018, Happy Innova has been researching salivaomics with the aim of revolutionizing the disease diagnosis and monitoring sector.
